Indie Music….don’t fear the Reaper

Luckily for FLY53, we dont put all our eggs in one basket, and that rings especially true when it comes to music, where if something kicks ass, we support it regardless of genre. It has been suggested however, that 2009 was the year that British guitar based Indie music died. This feeling is supposedly backed up by the fact that The Arctic Monkeys album sold a fifth of its expected sales, only two bands featured in the top 20 albums of 2009, and the year saw bands such as Hard-Fi and The Pigeon Detectives (to name but a few) laying very low indeed. Is the Genre really dead…or has over saturation just driven the public to yearn for something else?

In our opinion, music moves in cycles…the genre is not dead, its just had its time for now, and will surely become popular again like every other genre. What 2009 did was weed out the shit bands, the ones that were not innovating their sound with their albums, simply following the popular formula that was working at the time. Bands such as Kasabian have managed to weather the 2009 storm for that very fact…they further the genre with their albums, and this will never get boring. Unfortunately, the over saturated Indie period has been replaced by a lot of pop shit. Just remember, the best music is not usually in the charts, and is never defined by what’s selling well…

Indie fans dont cry…the bands that should remain after the cull will…its how music works.
