Round 1……..fight

If you have only ever heard of Hadouken! from Streetfighter, you really are stuck in the 90’s. Check out a band of the same name, and you may well forget the beat ‘em up game of the past and associate the word with a Dance-Rock act causing knockouts all over the country. The band met at Leeds Uni, and have created a mash-up of genres that genuinely works, fronted by the grime-esque vocals of James Smith and the backbone synth work of Alice Spooner. The band have just been named as headliners of the Shockwaves NME tour in February, with their second album ‘For The Masses’ released only a week earlier on legendary Kitsune Records (also Atlantic Records). The band have had sweet couple of years, initially plugged by Mike Skinner in 2007 their relentless work schedule, energetic stage show and genre expanding music earned them various festival slots and has led to their recent NME Tour position.

The follow up album too Music for an Accelerated Culture drops on 25th Jan 2010, so expect a full review in our Music section, and make sure you cop it and hit your ears with a Sonic Boom

New Year….New Liver?
NYE as everyone knows, is the time for drinking away the sorrows of 2009 (especially since THE party of 2009 got cancelled!) and marking the first day of the new year face down in your own shame with the remnants of your dignity stuck to your shirt.
Here at FLY53 we want to know what and where the best NYE parties are happening this year?
We will be posting up events we know about shortly that we think are going to rock, but we want your input.
If we agree that you are going to be seeing out the year in style, we want you to review the night for us, and get your NYE story immortalised in the FLY53 blog.

Last time, FLY53 introduced you to local artist Paul Townend (more of his street art next time) whose art makes you smile. This week its the turn of Travis Louie from New York. His art revolves around his imaginary world in Victorian and Edwardian times. Louie seems fascinated with human oddities such as those in fabled freak shows, mythical beings and the general abnormal. Its a world apart from the last work featured in our Culture Shock section, and leaves you feeling slightly creeped out…but at the same time curious to see more. Take a look, see if you agree.

Its my party and il cry if i want too….

It’s official…2009 is a write off…..because the party of the year has been cancelled!

Due to the illness of Gallows guitarist Steph Carter, not only are Gallows having to cancel this slot but all their remaining gigs this side of christmas. This is the official word from the band:

“Unfortunately we’re having to announce the cancellation of the remaining Gallows shows of 2009 – Watford, London and Newcastle. Steph is still unwell and has been told that he will not be able to play any more shows this year and so this has forced us to pull out of these shows.
We’re really sorry to disappoint all our fans who were looking forward to seeing us in 2009 but we promise we’ll come back better and stronger than ever in 2010 and we hope you’ll join us at a show next year.”

Refunds will be given automatically by wegottickets.com.
If you have any queries regarding the cancellation please email vicepresents@viceuk.com or call us on +44 (0)207 749 7820

FLY53 wish Steph a speedy recovery, and apologise for the short notice to all our people that were primed to party with us….time to put on the stretchy waistband trousers and hibernate for winter…we are looking to make this happen in the new year instead, so keep checking our site and VICE for info of when you can shake off those Xmas pounds…

Like a movie villain…this event will be back and stronger than ever…

SLOW INEVITABLE
DEATH OF AMERICAN MUSCLE
SLOW MOTION CAR CRASH

This sculpture is a machine that advances two full sized automobiles slowly into one another over a period of 6 days, simulating a head on automobile collision.  Each car moves about three feet into the other.  The movement is so slow as to be invisible.
It is almost impossible to watch a modern action film without at least one automobile wreck. Why do we find interest and excitement it new versions of the same event?  Why are we not satisfied? Cars are extensions of our body and our ego.  We buy or modify cars that reflect our personalities and egos.  When we see an automobile destroyed, in a way we are looking at our own inevitable death. This moment is, because of it’s inherent speed, almost invisible. We have slowed the event via film and video but only from a cameras perspective. We never get to see the transformation of living breathing car too wreck in its entirety, in detail. This piece offers the viewer the ability to examine in three dimensions the collision of these cars. A moment that might take a fraction of a second in an actual collision will be expanded to take days.
Car wrecks are spectacular moments.  This piece by changing one of the key variables removes and changes the nature of the event.   What was life threatening is now rendered safe.  What was supremely spectacular is now almost static.   The wreck has been broken down to its Newtonian components.  We are left to contemplate our own mortality our own Newtonian components.

This guy must have Bernards Watch….

If the London music scene was a body, Timo Garcia would be the lungs…constantly working..literally living and breathing the culture. He has made a subconscious attack on the Dance music scene…emerging from near obscurity to being one of the most talked about emerging DJ/Producers around. Like most these days, Garcia is more than a DJ, with his own label ‘Berwick Street Records’, residing in the Shoreditch…the current ground zero for the fashion and music trends that feed the nations new scenes. This uber cool label has been said to cover all bases when it comes to remixes, but somehow Garcia still finds time to keep a residency at Ministry of Sound and Globetrot extensively DJ’ing…..its not human! His debut artist album Wonderlust Bug is commanding recommendations from some of the worlds biggest artists (Sasha,Timo Mass, M.A.N.D.Y) and is available to download on our facebook…..free!

We are rarely wrong about anything at FLY53, and definitely see a bright future for TIMO GARCIA…just remember where you heard it first!

West Midlands producer Bibio follows up the immense Ambivalence Avenue with this4 track LP, including 8 remixes by Bibio’s mates. This is another genre expanding LP, fusing Hip-hop, LO-FI and guitarpop into one awesome LP…definitely worth a listen…
