It’s monday, its January, it’s raining and if you’re anything like us you’ve broken all your new years resolutions at the weekend and are feeling pretty shitty.

Never fear, ok so we can’t take back the tequila or kebab but we can hit you up with this little bundle of joy to brighten your day. It’s here, our long awaited, eagerly anticipated, shit hot (if we do say so ourselves) Fly53 Fanzine #13 has arrived.

Featuring all exclusive interviews with the likes of Django Django, Maximo Park, Andy Burrows, Dhani Harrison and thenewnotwo, Citizens, Alberta Cross many more it’s fair to say we’ve been dying to share it with you.

And as if that lot wasn’t enough we’ve also squeezed everything you need to know about our (until now, top secret) upcoming collaboration with none other than Arturo flippin’ Vega, the creative director The Ramones (Yeah, we know it’s going to be BIG).

Again partnered with the gents over at Artrocker Magazine Zine #13 sheds light on all the latest and greatest from the music together we love, not only the big names but also the talented newcomers who have been gracing our office radios over the last 3 months, Allah Las, Tom Odell and Chrome Canyon but to name a few.

2012 has been a big year for us and 2013 is set to be even bigger. Three words. Keep it locked.

Get comfy, read all about it and pass it on. Fly53 – Outfitters for the resistance.

Including all exclusive interviews with the likes of Django Django, Maximo Park, Andy Burrows, Dhani Harrison and thenewnotwo, Citizens, Alberta Cross and many more it’s fair to say it’s not all been blood sweat and tears, we’ve had a pretty good time making it too(shhh don’t tell the boss). As if more interviews than we thought physically possible wasn’t enough, we’ve also squeezed everything you need to know about our (until now, top secret) upcoming collaboration with none Arturo Vega, the creative director The Ramones (Yeah, we know it’s going to be BIG).

Can’t get to a Fly53 retailer? Never fear a digital copy will be available right here, christmas eve.

Maximo Park – The Thinking Man’s Band

Top 20 hits, Gold albums, sold out tours, and Mercury Prize nominations are all par for the course for Newcastle’s favourite sons Maxïmo Park. Now the band’s back to do it all over again with the release of their fourth album ‘The National Health.’

We met in a dark warehouse, echoing, empty, and vast. No frills which is fitting really, Maxïmo Park are smart cookies, thinkers, led by the thinker’s thinker, Paul Smith. Some folks like to dance, others to paint, Paul likes to think. He does it a lot. So I know that there are a set of floodgates waiting to open, that given the right stimulus Paul will burst out and fill the place with erudition. So we decide to make Paul wait a bit and direct the first question to Lukas…

How important are clothes to your on-stage personas?

Clothes, according to me, maketh the man.

I think that when you go on-stage they’re important, they’re part of putting on the persona that you have on-stage, because, lets be honest it’s not a normal place to be.

There’s so much you do on-stage you wouldn’t normally do, gestures and running about. When you’re there you’re trying to convey the energy and emotions of the songs to people who are a long way away. So what you wear is part of that. It helps you go into ‘show mode’ a little bit.

Check out the Full and exclusive interview in Fly53 Fanzine #13 available at selected retailers.

Hadouken! have been down with FLY53 since the dinosaurs were roaming the earth! Thankfully they died off millions of years ago…and in their wake (only a little while after) a new ruler has emerged…one of our favourite bands over here at FLY53….Hadouken!

Not only are there pretty little faces splashed all over our Fanzine front cover…but they even stopped by for a little interview as well:

You’ve been Descibed as a ‘Grindie’ band, how would describe yourselves?

Five twenty-something alcoholics who make noise.

As well as your name, do video games influence your sound?

We loved computer games growing up. Fifa 10 influences my mood on a day-to-day basis, and its probably better if I win!

What can we expect from the new album?

It’s a hard and heavy sound, energetic and most importantly lots of unpretentious fun.

When you made the album what were you responding or reacting to?

Playing tours up and down the country and the rest of the world gave us a taste for the style of music we really wanted to play to our audiences. Heavy, bassy, chaotic.

Aside from the new album what’s on the horizon for Hadouken?

We are looking forward to touring the rest of the world after playing up and down the country. So bring on Japan, Europe and the USA!

How important is fashion to Hadouken?

Fashions change, style is eternal. We all take pride in the way we dress, but don’t lose much sleep about what we are going to put on in the morning. Free clothes are a huge bonus.

What’s your worse fashion secret?

Nu Rave.

What did you all have for breakfast this morning?

Alka Seltzer

The band are currently touring, promoting their brand new album ‘For The Masses’…so be sure to check their website for full touring schedule, along with the FLY53 blog where we hope to run a tour diary exclusively with the band!

Fifteen Years Ago….

Fifteen years we wrote our first fanzine and now we’re about to join the 21st Century.

Since that time we’ve been playing in bands far longer than we’ve been making clothes. In fact the clothing came about because we were playing in bands. Our bands weren’t as good as some of the others back in the mid 90’s so we made their T-shirts and found we were much better at that.

The British music scene is our heritage and like many of the bands and artists from back then as well as now, we’ve remained fiercely independent – growing and developing on or own terms. For those that know us, this is a big reason why they wear Fly53.

We’re still music fans first and foremost. We still get overly excited by music, be it a rough demo from a brand new unknown band or familiar strains of an almost forgotten classic, either have us dancing around the office, pub, bedroom, street…

As our new Spring / Summer 09 collection goes into stores, we thought it would be cool to go back to our roots and produce a ‘Fanzine’ again. We’ve been talking about this for a long time and finally during one of many long drunken music debates our friends at Clash magazine called our bluff and said let’s do it. So if you missed it you can check out some of the articles and more on our new blog. Music from people we like, new bands, bands you probably already know and some Fly53 friends old and new.

We’ll be doing another printed edition soon so until then we hope you like the clothes, the music and the musings. Check out what we do at fly53.com.
