We can’t quite believe it, but this year marks the fifth year of the mighty Boomtown festival hitting us up with the finest in reggae, dub, funk, punk, swing, ska and bass music in the land.

Sold out year on year this is possibly the fastest growing festival to date multiplying like rabbits from just 1,000 dedicated ravers in 2009 to 28,000 of us rocking up with a pocket full of beans and a bag full of tins in 2012.

This year this ever boundary busting music phenomenon will unveil even more craziness for the ladies and gents of Boomtown town. Including a 300 ft moving magic carpet ride offering visitors an amazing view of the entire camp and saving tired feet for late night partying, a 15 meter high Lion’s Den Mayan temple and The Spider of Arcadia who will be stomping his way through the seedy streets to stake his claim and dub the centre of Downtown the hottest party destination in town.

Excited is an understatement, weird and wonderful and jam packed with some of our favourite DJs and artists ever including Stantion Warriors, DJ Hype, David Rodigan, Dirtyphonics, and more. Roll the fuck on August we say.

Eagles of Death Metal, the highly acclaimed American rock band from Palm Desert, California have been in collaboration with Fly53 since the wolf man found his first facial hair. That’s a long bloody time and their still one of our favourite rock bands on the books.

Catch EoDM on the festival scene this year. They are confirmed to play at Kulturfabrik Kofmehl festival in Switzerland on the 21st of June, Pukkelpop Festival in Belgium on 16 – 18 August and Reading and Leeds Festival on the 24 – 26 August. So don’t miss out ..

Jesse “The Devil” Hughes, who formed EoDM in 1998, has just released a spanking new solo album aptly named ‘Honkey Kong’, produced by Tony Hoffer, responsible for some of the most successful indie-rock albums of recent years including The Fratellis & The Kooks. ‘Honkey Kong’ is described as “a mix of glam-pop, keyboard-heavy dance grooves, and Hughes’ signature brand of rock’n’roll grit that drips with swagger”. Tracks set for inclusion are ’Trippy Blob’, ’No Fun’ and ‘Swallowed By The Night’.

Dirty Pretty Docklands

The On/Off  Libertine and ex Dirty Pretty Things Member, Carl Barat is set to appear at the Latitude festival where he will introduce a film about the London Docklands….random….but why Carl?

The Barat has had a busy year so far which has included making his theatre debut and again reforming the much celebrated Libertines. The band are set to rock the Leed’s festival, and will no doubt be the band to see!

In between this, however, Carl Barat has narrated a fascinating documentary about the London docklands area. The historic area is surrounded in myth and legend, connecting London to the outside world. The band will perform the score to the film live, with Barat lending his vocals to ‘The Rime Of The Modern Mariner’

Carl Barat is set to introduce the film and will be accompanied by writer and director Mark Donne to discuss the attachment to the London docklands area.

The screening will sit alongside many huge acts including Belle & Sebastian, Vampire Weekend and more.

Latitude runs between July 15th – 18th, and if you want to win tickets…then FLY53 CAN HELP!

Check out the Competition section, where there is a link win! All you have to do is follow it, and tell us why you should be there….that easy!!

FLY53 Favourites Get The Fanzine Treatment!

Hadouken! have been down with FLY53 since the dinosaurs were roaming the earth! Thankfully they died off millions of years ago…and in their wake (only a little while after) a new ruler has emerged…one of our favourite bands over here at FLY53….Hadouken!

Not only are there pretty little faces splashed all over our Fanzine front cover…but they even stopped by for a little interview as well:

You’ve been Descibed as a ‘Grindie’ band, how would describe yourselves?

Five twenty-something alcoholics who make noise.

As well as your name, do video games influence your sound?

We loved computer games growing up. Fifa 10 influences my mood on a day-to-day basis, and its probably better if I win!

What can we expect from the new album?

It’s a hard and heavy sound, energetic and most importantly lots of unpretentious fun.

When you made the album what were you responding or reacting to?

Playing tours up and down the country and the rest of the world gave us a taste for the style of music we really wanted to play to our audiences. Heavy, bassy, chaotic.

Aside from the new album what’s on the horizon for Hadouken?

We are looking forward to touring the rest of the world after playing up and down the country. So bring on Japan, Europe and the USA!

How important is fashion to Hadouken?

Fashions change, style is eternal. We all take pride in the way we dress, but don’t lose much sleep about what we are going to put on in the morning. Free clothes are a huge bonus.

What’s your worse fashion secret?

Nu Rave.

What did you all have for breakfast this morning?

Alka Seltzer

The band are currently touring, promoting their brand new album ‘For The Masses’…so be sure to check their website for full touring schedule, along with the FLY53 blog where we hope to run a tour diary exclusively with the band!
