The Futureheads Interview

Post-punk, Sunderland born, English Indie rock band The Futureheads exploded onto the music scene in September 2004 with the release and impressive success of their self titled debut album. Taking their name from the title of The Flaming Lips album, ‘Hit to Death in the Future Head’ and influenced by a host of big names Kate Bush, Fugazi, Devo, The Jam and Queen but to name a few, their first album; energetic, upbeat and witty, went down a treat and well and truly laid the foundation for great things to come.

Eight years, five albums, including ‘Rant’ the bands fifth album which is entirely a cappella, one US tour, a UK tour supporting Foo Fighters and a list longer than my arm of successful singles later, Barry, Jaff, Pete and Ross were over in London and we wern’t going to miss the chance to catch up over a beer.

We joined forces with our mates over at Artrocker Magazine and met up with the boys for a cheeky interview before they ran out on stage to play the last night of The Camden Crawl at Koko – kitted out in Fly53 threads, naturally.

Musical Distraction – Justice

Talk about musical distraction: French electronic music duo Justice have had us playing their new video on repeat down at Fly53 headquarters.

The epic production of the “New Lands” video features the pairs version of the current Olympics and finds pumped up burly blokes competing in everything from football and baseball to roller hockey and motorcycle racing.

With a nod the themes of their previous video “New Lands” also features an astronaut as a judge and certainly serves as another brain melting tour around planet justice.

Turn it up loud. Sit back. Enjoy.

These are the days we wish we still had our women’s clothing so we could send some M.I.A’s way. Seen her new video? It’s a Romain Gavras creation again and she’s got her swagger back in spades. Rap cliche turned on their heads with her trademark chamelion-like borrowing of a cultural hook (arabic this time round as opposed to Brazilian before) that works so well. The bit where she is filing her nails is a wee bit obvious that the car is actually supported from the other side, but we love that it looks dangerously mental.

Amazeballs. ‘I will force spiders and badgers on the enemy, and get them to shut up’ – The U.S. political race is aways fodder for anyone to really take the Michael as much as possible, and we love that part of the race. Here is the genius of A BLR Soundbite with your brain playing your eyes off against your ears as you read heir lips and think they could just be talking about ‘F*ck them, I am a party rapper that’s how I am’ wee inducing funniness. Pulled Apart by Horses have let rip with their new single aptly titled V.E.N.O.M. We say aptly because that’s what they spit on the track. Playing hard and heavy is the way we love them, but check the images; they have some serious middle fingers, foaming mouths and chop their own hand off, but don’t take our word for it, stop being so lazy and watch the pretty moving images. Is Tropical at the You Tube Art Night

Fly53′s good friends ‘Is Tropical’ are currently ripping it up on a worldwide tour, hitting North and South America, Europe and the Far East. Its cool to see them finally getting the recognition they deserve, developing a massive reputation for their impressive live shows, we knew it would eventually kick off.

Even during their biggest ever tour ‘Is Tropical’ have taken the time out for us to answer a few questions.

You are off on tour soon, what/where are you looking forward to the most?

Got to be New York City, we’ve never played there but have a lot of friends living there so should be a party. Being on the road can be quite relaxing… but then there’s the constant cycle of hung over, play show, get drunk and the back to hung over.

We always ask for tour bus shenanigans. There must be a good story?

Just downloaded worms on the computer, an old game from childhood. It has now taken over all tour bus shenanigans.

Do you still squat or has making it in the industry turned you into a group of big softies?

Big softies. We went away on our second tour and got back to our shit thrown out on the streets and no house. It just got too hard to keep a house secure.

You have a chance to jump on stage at a concert with one band and jam like it’s 2099 would you choose a) Robbie Williams b) Beyonce c) N Dubz d) Cliff Richard

Beyonce! but only to get close to Jay-z’s arse.

Which song off the new album do you like playing the most and why?

What??? It was a song that had no direction planed and became something we would have never guessed.

Ever wish anyone would ask you a question, but no one has asked it? Give us the answer but not the question.

Sometimes we have that question “What’s your favorite question?” But we always forget the good ones, like how you forget jokes. ‘Whats your love making musical play list?’ was a good one.

Have you got any shit for inciting violence/riots because you cover your faces in pictures? Must be gutted they all followed your lead and gave it a bad name…

What pricks. It was all a kind of graffiti thing taken from photos in train yards. And we have a few big fans that have been spraying ‘IS TROPICAL’ on the streets of there local cities.

Last question, promise. Thanks to anyone that’s helped you out on the way?

We give our manager, Paul Resende, a lot of shit but he works real hard. All the bands that have taken us away with them. Our booking agent, Giovanna, Mat Willis, Macbeth, Catch… probably forgot a few here, but the rest are on our album.

Dr Dre – Back on the scene with a crash

Our collective hearts lightened and heads nodded at the release of Dr Dre’s new album – The Detox. He’s been bangin’ heads and throwing down parties since the days of Niggaz Wit Attitude when they literally fired the West Coast into the global consciousness. The Chronic along with intro’s to Slim Shady and Mr S. Dogg cemented his production talents as a global brand. He’s unquestionably dope.

The new release shows he’s not gone soft, actually, check the video he looks like he could give The Rock a good old fashioned hetero man wrestle. Buff. His lyrics are just as hard just and inflammatory and his beats will be played for the whole of the summer. The new track featuring Jay Z – Under Pressure – is a rip roaring full on classic, straight off the bat. We will be sad if he follows through with his threat to retire. Imagine the retirement home with Dre hangin’ in it, talk about chillaxing.
