Cassell the Beatmaker is straight up, one talented guy…and amongst the next generation of producer that is not only a multi-instrumentalist, but purely self-made, creating his own opportunities and making the industry play by his rules

We can only salute this at FLY53…

His CV is impressive, working with some of the most talented artists in the UK Urban scene (Akala, Black Twang to name a few), creating his own projects and still has time to be a member of one of the most successful crossover bands in the UK; The Streets. Link this with the fact that he works tirelessly with charities, mentoring disadvantaged kids, teaching them music production and you have got the recipe for an artist who deserves to make it in the industry….

We caught up with him recently for his thoughts on some ‘important’ world issues…

1.Is there one track or artist you heard that made you think ‘I want to be a musician’?      

 Musical Youth. Pass The Dutchie.

2. Whose’s your favourite drummer of all time (dead or alive)?                                                                 

I have many favourite drummers, I cant just say one. But I like Dennis Chambers,Dave weckyl , Steve Gadd, Mark Mondesir to name a few.

3.If you where not a musician what else would you do?                                                                            

Can’t even imagine not being a musician probably be a computer hacker like the guy in the film War Games.

 4. If you were any animal, what would you be?                                                                                      

Definitely a lion the king of the Jungle. 

5. If you could travel through time, where would you go?                                                                                

I would go back to when Pam Grier played Foxy Brown and chat her up etc….

6.Would Megan Fox’s toe thumb put you off?                                                                                                    

Nar as long as I don’t have to suck it…..now if you said Eva Mendes …..

7. Rich and unhappy, or unhappy and broke?                                                                                              

There nothing good about either of those options. I would be just unhappy. Rather be Happy & Wealthy.

8.Whats your best dance move?                                                                                                                               

The Running Man mixed with The Robot.

9. What fruit best represents Cassell?                                                                                                                       

A mango smooth on the outside and sweet and juicy inside.

10. Whats Cassell The Beatmaker doing at the moment?                                                                      

 Well, just finished a UK/US tour with The Streets. Finished co writing & recording on Plan B’s Album and now rehearsing for UK tour. Played drums in his new video for the single, ’Stay too long’. Also recording/writing with Akala for his new album due out next year as well as working in his Hip-hop Shakespeare project.

11. If you had to save one thing from your house in a fire what would it be?                                      

My sexy lady painted on my bass drum skin.

12. If you were stranded on a desert island would you try and escape or sit back with some mango juice?                                                                                                                                                                

Depends who I was stranded with, but probably would get bored and want to escape.

13. Are the black bits on the inside of a banana spiders eggs?                                                                     

No it’s a sweet version of caviar!

14.If you could erase one musician from aural history for crimes against music…who would it be?                                                                                                                                                                                      

 That pink over grown blob. Oh yeah its called Mr blobby.

15.Who was your favourite WWF wrestler of all time                                                                              

 That’s got to be my 5 year old nephew Kieran. He knows all the moves.
