FLY53 MENSWEAR AUTUMN/WINTER 06
7 Oct 2006 15:26
Continuing the long-term allegiance with the underground fraternities, diverse individuals brought together by a shared sense of belonging......a gang mentality.
Fly53 again bursts into a new season with the finest collection to date. From the rowing club to the reform school boxing club. From Eton dropouts to the back street gym. Pimms Vs Pills. Fly53 is out to hunt down, recruit and form new allegiances.
The internal restructuring of the design team has been shaken up and revitalized. After many years of whispers and rumours Fly founding Father - Captain Lenny ‘Wolfman’ Grubbs was finally discovered working as a florist in Kidderminster (see appendix i). Tempted back into the Fly53 fold, mystery, supposition and controversy still surround his life and his activities remain hazy to even the inner most circle of Fly53. Suffice to say The Wolfman is back. To the Wolfman everything is competition and he will not rest until world domination is ours.
The return of the Wolfman heralds the return of a survivalist nature to the collection, fluidly blending function, formality and tradition – all elements derived from the twisted use of the classic in the underground.
Function
Silhouettes combining technical shapes and ergonomics with faded camouflage prints and reflective detailing. Functional waterproof, breathable materials. Taped seams and water proof zips. Survivalist garments cleverly cut to give an updated slimline profile whilst retaining ergonomic movement. Bonded polar fleece returns with The Wolfman from the harsh Bolivian Winter.Natural fabrics twisted into functional form – Japanese indigo ringspun denim constructed and cut with the same functionality used in the Wolfman’s kickball kit. Classic single 40’s cotton shirting cut to give a flattering slim fit whilst allowing full movement of the arms for contact sports.
Formality
Sharp detailing, structure and clean fabrics give the façade of formality. Look deeper and the Wolfman subverts with detail. Formal shirts with strengthened shoulder patches for rifle butts. Dress shirts with ergonomic darted sleeves for swift retribution movement. Military dress Jackets beaten, destroyed and branded as Fly53, taken away from the intended use, or maintained as a formal garment to subverted or to disguise the wearer from the powers that be.Tradition
Traditional themes have long been taken on adopted and subverted by the underground fraternities. Classic garments get the Fly53 twist - heavy wool melton duffle coats conceal embroidered linings of the signature camo. Sedate fine gauge knits with brightly striped backs. Reversible knitwear, low key and uncluttered on one side, bearing full scale branding of the Fly53 team on the other. Garment traditions of work wear and military function are updated and refined through cut and detail. Traditional cotton poplins are bonded with fleece to create multi purpose crossover garments. Silhouettes are slim and uncluttered. Details on every garment give interest and depth, involving the wearer in the garment, telling a secret, bringing you into the circle.
Whilst style and looks are combined to create a defined style, and the natural and traditional fabrics act as a foil for the technical fabrics, graphics, branding and colour unify the collection. A strong accessible outerwear palette of charcoal, khaki, cement and burgundy is accented by faded brights of dusty pink, off white and lemon. The occasional flash of a concealed vivid bright is evidence to the wearer of the secret solidarity of the brand.
Branding steps up a level with the introduction of a new labelling package, colour coded throughout the collection this takes the strongly identifiable crest to a new level of detail and interest. A signature camouflage print with an updated organic but technical theme runs throughout the collection from waterproof jackets to pocket bags in jeans. Graphic applications run the spectrum of possibilities from embroidery to flock, from injection moulding to discharge pigment printing. Reworked collegic logos and enamelled pin badges re-enforced the brotherhood of the Fly53 fraternity.
